Rome Extension

Rome, a modern city that still lives in its ancient past.  This city is unlike any other in the world in that you’ll find an abundance of Renaissance art and architecture side by side with pre-Christian monuments, ancient ruins and antiquities are surrounded by medieval churches and crossed by modern piazzas.  St. Peters Cathedral, the awe-inspiring  world headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church is literally next door to one of the greatest collections of art treasures ever assembled.  Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Da Vinci and Raphael are all household names in this city, center of the civilized world for over a 1000 years.

Available before or after any Lost in Italy tour.
2 ½ Full Days in Rome, 3 Nights

Why is this tour better than all the other cheaper Rome tours?
* Your hotel is located in the historic district, in the midst of all the wonderful sites...NOT in an outlying area, where most budget Rome tours put their customers.
* This is a PRIVATE tour, with your own Roman guide that meets you at your hotel. The guide is just for the Lost in Italy group. Many Rome tours have you travel quite far to a central meeting point. There you'll mill around with dozens, perhaps hundreds of tourists as they organize you into big groups and put you on a bus. Often there are so many people in your group you'll have to listen to your guide through a headset. Good luck getting to know them during the day.

Day 1
Benvenuti a Roma

Your Lost in Italy tour leader can arrange a private or group transfer to Rome for you at the end of your Lost in Italy tour. You will arrive at your hotel in Rome around midday today, with plenty of time to get settled and explore the nearby area.  We use small, beautiful hotels chosen for their location in the heart of the old city.  From here it’s possible to walk to all of the important sites, and you’ll also be immersed in the wonderful night time ambiance of Rome…bustling, romantic piazzas lined with sidewalk cafes, beautiful illuminated fountains, and Romans strolling arm in arm along the winding cobblestone streets.

Day 2
Rome with a Roman

Experience Rome with a local guide today as they take you on a fascinating guided walking tour of the Monuments of Rome. Your private guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel after breakfast, then stroll with you across the city to visit some of the city's most famous sites, St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. You'll start with Piazza San Bernardo, adorned by Moses' Fountain, then head towards Piazza della Repubblica and on to St. Peter's Square. You'll have a visit inside the magnificent St. Peter's, and then afterwards stroll through gorgeous Piazza Navona, built on the ruins of Domitian's chariot course and adorned by one of the most famous fountains in the world, the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the masterpiece built by Bernini in 1651. Next you'll enjoy a visit to the Pantheon, Temple of All the Gods, originally built as a temple to the seven dieties of the seven planets in the state religion of ancient Rome. Last, but certainly not least, is the Trevi Fountain, one of the most popular sites in Rome! One of the best things about having your own private Roman tour guide is that during your walk around the city they'll be able to point out lots of smaller, lesser-known attractions will help fill in the gaps and expand your understanding of Rome and its past.  The daily lives and activities of the ancient, medieval, and present-day citizens will come alive as you stroll the town. Your guide can also give you some great ideas about what you might want to do during your free time on your own exploration.

This afternoon is free to explore on your own. Now that you have an understanding of Rome, you’re off on your own!  There are so many fascinating nooks and crannies in this stunning city that you'll find you have a never-ending desire to see "what's around the next corner"! Despite its size, Rome is still known as a city of many neighborhoods...so explore Rome as you wander throught them this afternoon. Of course cafes and ristoranti abound, so you’ll have no problem finding a wonderful Roman ristorante for your dinner tonight!

Day 3
Go Get Lost in Roma

This morning after breakfast your guide will again meet you to take you on another fascinating walk, this time to explore the splendour of the classic Roman Empire. First you'll visit the Roman Forum, walking along the ancient pavement that so many historical figures have walked. You'll cross the ruins of the Forum, the Curia and the Reggia. You'll admire the Temple of Vesta, the Arch of Titus, and the awe-inspiring Arch of Constantine. All of this will set the stage for you visit to the Colosseum. Originally named the Flavian Amphitheatre, it was used for gladitorial contests and public spectacles. It was the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire, completed in 80 AD under Titus. Last you'll visit Palatine Hill, the ancient historic residence of the Caesars. After your tour today you'll have more free time to explore Rome on your own. There is so much to this massive city that you have to accept that it’s impossible to see it all in one trip.  The shopping district along the Via Veneto is one of the best in the world, and the Spanish Steps, the Vatican Museum, the Villa Borghese and the Trastevere neighborhood are all worth your time to visit and experience.  Of course cafes and ristoranti abound, so you’ll have no problem staying well fed on Roman cuisine during the day!  This evening will be perfect for a nighttime stroll between the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona, center of Rome nightlife.

Day 4
Arrivederci Roma

Today you'll say your goodbyes to one of the most fascinating cities in the world, but it may not be farewell forever…if you tossed coins in the Trevi fountain last night, you’re sure to return to Rome!
